7 Wonders Duel Pantheon is the first (and so far only) expansion to the 2 player civilization building game 7 Wonders Duel. In the expansion you are seeking the favors of the God’s that will aid you in the various paths to victory available in the game.
The Divinity cards are depicted on larger than standard sized cards, with beautiful artwork taking up most of the card space. The new board that comes with the expansion has spaces where the divinity cards go, and fits like a puzzle piece with the board from the base game. Aside from those components there’s a handful of tokens and cards. MSRP at $25 is kind of steep for what’s inside the box, but what’s there is quality. We were disappointed that there’s not a way to fit the base game and the expansion in the original box without removing the nice insert.
The main feature that this expansion adds is the “divinity cards.” Basically, in the first round you will pick up tokens that are placed face up on various cards in the pyramid. If you are the player to reveal the card with a token on it you will be able to determine the money value of one of the divinity cards. During the second and third rounds you can purchase the divinity cards that were chosen in the first round. These cards add bonuses that provide more options for how to achieve the different paths of victory (scientific, military, or cultural). We think these God cards made scientific and military victories more plausible. They also made the game feel more tactical because you can see what type of cards your opponent is making cheaper for themselves. For example, if your opponent is making red divinity cards cheaper for themselves you will realize you will need to do something to prevent them from taking a military victory.
In addition to this, temples replace the guild cards from the original game. Tokens received in the first round can be used to purchase these temple cards more easily. They offer a varying amount of bonus points depending on how many you get. We thought the temple cards were a good replacement for the guild cards, as they give you a bonus for something you achieved during the game, rather than something your opponent has built up. We thought we were going to have a problem getting enough money to spend on all these new cards, but from discount tokens your receive it ended up being a non-issue.
- Good artwork
- Makes some strategies from the base game more viable
- Gives you more tactical options, because you’re able to choose not to take a card from the pyramid
- Doesn’t fit in original box without removing the insert
- Not the best value for the money
Final Thoughts and Rating
7 Wonders Duel Pantheon improves on 7 Wonders Duel by improving the strategies and tactics available to you. We think it’s a worthy expansion to the base game, and we probably won’t play without it in the future.
